Four Donegal Pride of Place initiatives nominated by Donegal County Council are heading to Ennis, Co Clare this Saturday, November 14 for the announcement of the IPB Cooperation all-Island Ireland competition winners.
This competition is about acknowledging the fantastic work being done by communities everywhere in both the physical and the social sense, through regeneration and development, to provide facilities in the community, creating a community spirit and a sense of belonging.
It is also about the Local Authority’s support and partnership with the community groups in building healthy and sustainable communities.

This is the twelfth year for Donegal County Council to be involved in this prestigious and popular competition. County Donegal has seen many successes over the years and has scooped some of the overall top prizes: Fanad achieving the overall Islands and Coastal Communities award last year and Ionad Naomh Pádraig, Dore receiving the runner-up Population category. Donegal County Council achieved the best Local Authority Award in 2013.
The initiatives going forward from Donegal demonstrate their amazing capacity to care for the people in their communities and respect their heritage, culture and environment. The initiatives featuring in the IPB Pride of Place competition 2015 are: Coiste Pobail Ghort a’Choirce who are entered in the Islands and Coastal Communities category; The Workhouse, Dunfanaghy is featured in the Urban Neighbourhood/Village category; The Sliabh Sneacht Centre, Drumfries are in the 300-1000 Population category and the Killybegs Community Council are in the 1000 – 2000 Population category.

An Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, Cllr Ciaran Brogan, this week stated it was a great achievement for these Donegal community groups to have reached national recognition to the 2015 IPB Cooperation Ireland Pride of Place Awards.
“I have had the honour of presenting them with the Donegal County Council Pride of Place awards during Social Inclusion Week in July of this year where they were recognized and congratulated for their great community journeys and achievements to date. Their presentations not only displayed the tremendous efforts and capabilities in building their perspective communities but also the professionalism in doing so through years of experience and passionate enthusiasm. I wish them great success next weekend in Ennis and throughout the future,” he said.
The Chief Executive of Donegal County Council, Séamus Neely, congratulated all the groups going forward saying these people were all winners.
“I congratulate everyone involved and all who participated in this year’s competition. Donegal County Council firmly believes that it is essential that we recognize communities and all the volunteers that give of themselves selflessly every day. It is clear that working together and getting things done increases peoples’ pride in where they live and in turn helps build vibrant communities. All those nominated epitomize the sense of community spirit that can be seen all across the county and the rest of Ireland, with people committed to creating positive civic change in their respective communities. I know that the future of Donegal is in good hands,” he said.

The 2015 IPB Pride of Place winners will be announced at a gala awards ceremony in Treacy’s Hotel, Ennis, Co Clare this coming Saturday, November 14 where in excess of 1000 people are expected to attend.
